Visitors, visitors everywhere
The year is speeding by and suddenly it’s time for prospective students to come see just what all the fuss is about. The post-offer visit days are in full swing! Instead of an ambassadorial sash to display my station I get a red shirt and a sign, which is good because I’m more of an autumn anyway.
Getting the chance to meet people who I’ll possibly be sat in class with next year is actually quite rewarding. At times it almost feels like they’re interviewing me; and that’s not a bad thing. So many first years question the why and what of their course and uni choice that it’s nice to be able to voice that and really solidify my choice. Plus it surprises me how much of the classes stick with me. Seriously. I mean I have trouble remembering my postcode now and then.
One of my favourite part about working the visit days is the registration at the beginning. Small crowds of parents and hopeful scholars flocking towards you for directions or other information is pretty fun. You see the arts students with funky clothing and hair; solo attendees introducing themselves to one another and swapping numbers to stay in touch; parents urging their kids to ask things and making even the oldest of them feel embarrassed in a way only parents can make you feel. Like when you were little and trying on school clothes only to have your mother pester you in public about them fitting properly. Cue eye roll and mumbled shushing.
