Settling into the first year

Here I am, university in full swing for the first year of Liberal Arts. Things are bound to be a little different compared to the foundation year I was on but so far I’m settling in fairly well. If anything, campus seems even more vibrant and lively than it used to, with students going to and fro, people rallying for causes, and just a general energy of a new academic year.

Of course, a new year means new people, which means an influx of members for the societies. Getting to know classmates in the brief times you have to chat during lectures is one thing, but nothing brings people out of their shell like a good social. Whether that’s due to the shenanigans of bar crawls or just the comfort of a nice cup of tea (or coffee for the caffeine deprived) remains to be seen. Being a Yorkshire man means the accent stands out a little but it always makes for a good icebreaker.

So what of the academic side? I’ll admit the reading is coming thick and fast and at times I’ve felt like I was juggling volumes of text (and with a circus school in town that’s actually an option in your spare time) but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t good stuff. The variety of subject matter within the Liberal Arts core units combined with my English pathway choices means I can draw on so many sources for discussions and essays. If my younger self knew I enjoyed essay writing he’d probably be up in arms what with the not fulfilling our dream job of superhero or kung-fu pizza delivery man (I watched Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles a lot and grossly misunderstood the job role).
